The ensuing story has Daphnis fending another suitor of Chloe, fighting pirates and to raising money for the dowry of his bride-to-be. Yet, there is an interesting twist to the plot of their parentage. Longus will be remembered for this love story, handed down to us through papyri discovered in a cave.4/5(11).
This was my first classical novel, having only read plays/poems beforehand. Daphnis and Chloe has been cited by many booktubers (whose opinions on classical literature I trust) as a great place to start with literature from antiquity, and the premise of this book was too good to pass up.

Read 8 reviews from the world's largest community for readers/5(8). A tender novel describing eager and inept young love, Daphnis and Chloe tells the story of a baby boy and girl who are discovered separately, two years apart, alone and exposed on a Greek mountainside.
Taken in by a goatherd and a shepherd respectively, and raised near the town of Mytilene, they grow to maturity unaware of one another's /5(15). Daphnis and Chloe is the best known, and the best, of the early Greek romances, precursors to the modern novel. Admired by Goethe, it has been reinterpreted in music and art by Ravel and Chagall.
This new translation is immensely readable, and does full justice to the humour and humanity of the story/5(K).
